OPEN POWERPOINT

Open Power Point
Go to: “Start Menu” >>to>> “Programs” >>to>> “Microsoft Power Point
Power Point will Open with the following dialogue box:


SLIDE LAYOUTS

Choose “Blank Presentation”
You will have a choice of slide layouts that will look like this:

Choose the layout that best fits your needs.   For most purposes, you can start with a blank slide and add the elements you want.

Whichever slide layout you choose, it can be changed to add or subtract bulleted lists, graphs, textboxes etc.


CUSTOMIZING YOUR TOOL BARS

 Go to the TOOLS menu on the Menu Bar and pull down to “CUSTOMIZE”.

1. Make sure the “Toolbars” tab is selected
2. Check to be sure you have the “Standard”, “Formatting” “Drawing” and “Menu Bar”

THE DRAW TOOL BAR

Notice the “Draw” Tool Bar :
It looks like this:

1.   Go to the Text Box icon and draw a Text Box on your slide.
Type in your text. Highlight your text and change the color and font sizes
 

2.   Use the Paint Bucket tool to color your box.

3. You can have lines around your box, make the box 3D and shadow the box by using the different tools on the DRAW TOOLBAR.
4. Go to the “Word Art” icon on your Draw Toolar. It looks like this: 
Double click on one of the choices and type in your text.  Click OK.  

Whenever you click on your Wordart to select it, a new tool bar will appear:


 

On the toolbar are buttons which will allow you to:

  • Return to the Word Art Gallery
  • Edit the text properties
  • Edit the Word Art Colors
  • Rotate the Word Art
  • Change the shape of the Word Art

INSERTING A NEW SLIDE

There are two ways to insert a new slide:
  1. Go to "INSERT" on the menu bar.   Pull down to "NEW SLIDE"
  2. On the toolbars, select the icon that looks like this:      or press Alt+N

DO NOT go to the "FILE" menu and pull down to " NEW".  This will begin a new presentation, not add a slide to the presentation you are working on.

Whichever slide layout you choose, it can be changed to add or subtract bulleted lists, graphs, textboxes etc.


INSERTING A GRAPHIC

Go to the "INSERT" menu and pull down to "PICTURE".   You have several locations from which you can insert a graphic.   You can insert clipart from the Microsoft Clipart Gallery.   You can also insert a graphic from a file you have saved.

Open the Internet.   Find a picture that illustrates your slide.   To save the picture, right click on the picture and pull your mouse to:  "SAVE PICTURE AS"

Give your picture a name you will remember and save it in your network folder.

Now TOGGLE back to PowerPoint on your TASKBAR.  Go to the "INSERT" menu and pull down to "PICTURE",   "FROM FILE".   Now you can NAVIGATE to where you saved your picture and insert it.   Once it is inserted, you can change the size of location of the picture on your slide.

You can also add a picture from the Internet by right clicking on the picture and pulling down to "COPY".   Toggle back to PowerPoint and paste the picture on your slide. 

**Remember to copy the Internet Address (URL) where you found the picture and add that site to your bibliography.


MOVING FROM SLIDE TO SLIDE

If you want to move to a previous or a later slide in your presentation, you can click on the slide on the left side of the window or use your scroll bar on the right side of the window.

You can change the order of the slides by dragging them to a new location on the left side.


FORMATTING THE BACKGROUND

 1.  DESIGN TEMPLATES:

  • Go to the “Format” Menu and pull down to “SLIDE DESIGN

  • Preview the Design Templates.

  • Pull down the arrow on the right side of the design to APPLY TO ALL SLIDES or to APPLY TO SELECTED SLIDES

2.   BACKGROUND COLORS:

Go to the “FORMAT” Menu and pull down to “BACKGROUND"

In the box that appears, pull down the arrow next to the thin white box.


Your options will be to select PowerPoint's pre-selected colors or

 
MORE COLORS or

FILL EFFECTS

Clicking on "MORE COLORS" allows you to select any color. 

Choose the color you like and click OK.

NOW THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART !!!!!!!!!!

Click "APPLY" to color only the slide you have open.

Click “APPLY ALL” to change ALL slides.

 

Pulling down the to menu to Fill Effectsallows you to choose from Gradients, Textures, Patterns or a Background Picture.

BACKGROUND PICTURES:

To use a picture for a background, you need to first save a picture into your folder.

  1. Find a picture you want as your background.  If it is on the Internet, right click and pull to "SAVE PICTURE AS".    Name the picture and save it in your folder.

  2. Go to "FORMAT", "BACKGROUND".   Pull the arrow down to "FILL EFFECTS" and click on the "PICTURE" tab.

  3. Hit the "SELECT PICTURE" button.     Browse to where you saved your picture.  Hit the "INSERT" button.

  4. The next screen gives you the choice to say OK or to SELECT a different picture.

  5. Once you have the correct picture, click either the APPLY or the APPLY ALL button.
