     Renaissance Program

Phoenix Academy is a unique school with a diverse population of students. We offer hope to the student who is academically struggling; the student who might otherwise quit. We have small student-centered learning environments geared to meet the diverse, individual needs of each student. Our motto is, "Every Student, Every Day, Whatever It Takes and Then Some!" We strive to increase academic performance, build self esteem, and encourage self-confidence in every student we personally recruit to our school. One of the many ways we do this is through our Renaissance Program.

What is Renaissance? The Renaissance program at Phoenix Academy not only acknowledges the educational accomplishments of our students, but also the positive choices and efforts made by students in the areas of attendance, behavior, citizenship, and learning gains – both large and small. We celebrate our students’ successes in all areas.

We also have another very special way this year that we are recognizing our students with our Renaissance Program. We have adopted the “Serious About Success” attitude and have small coupons that are given to students throughout the school day for various positive acknowledgements. The students are able to turn in the coupons to “purchase” a particular item available on our Serious About Success cart. The more coupons, the more items to choose from. The students are saving and responding positively to earn more. Our goal is to have a “Serious About Success” auction under our Renaissance program where the students can “bid” with their “coupons” for special items! That’s where our wonderful business partners come in!

We are very excited about the auction for our students. The students can’t wait to see what will be available to them. Would you please consider donating an item or gift card to enhance our Renaissance Program goals? We would be so appreciative! It is through giving supporters that we are able to successfully continue with our Renaissance program and wonderfully treat our students for their exciting accomplishments!

Sincerely,

Dr, Rachel Shelley

At Phoenix Academy, students learn to trust those around them, from their teachers to the administrative staff. Based on that trust, students start to build their self-esteem and believe in themselves. They begin to take control of their lives as they gain the confidence they need to chase their dreams. After time, students gain a feeling of accomplishment and personal satisfaction that encourages them to discover a thirst for knowledge. They see hope in their future and they take on the responsibility of shaping their future.

It doesn’t happen overnight, but with the Phoenix Academy’s policy of “Every Student, Every Day”, students can get their lives back on track. If you have an 8th or 9th grade student that you think could benefit from attending Phoenix Academy, where they’ll receive a personalized education using the latest technology and teaching methods, contact the Phoenix Academy today.

Commonly Asked Questions About Phoenix Academy

1. What type of student attends Phoenix Academy? What are the qualifying factors?

Students who attend Phoenix Academy are struggling academically and/or personally as they strive to be successful in a traditional school setting. Qualifying factors include low FCAT scores, grades, attendance, special programs, social readiness and/or current school referral. Students with significant behavioral issues will not meet the criteria for admission.

2. How did my child get referred? Are there other ways a student can be considered for attendance?

A student’s districted school may refer the learner to Phoenix when he or she is struggling to succeed academically, has scored low on the FCAT, and/or needs assistance with motivation or attendance. In addition to a school recommendation, students who have scored an FCAT level 1 or 2 may be contacted by Phoenix Academy staff to tour the school. Parents also may ask for their child to be considered for admission.

3. How is Phoenix Academy similar to other district schools?

Phoenix Academy is part of the Sarasota County School District and follows the regular school board schedule. Phoenix provides free/reduced lunch to qualifying students, bus transportation with pocket stops, educational field trips, access to sports programs and extra-curricular activities, counseling, incentive programs and grade level curriculum that includes electives to assist the student in meeting graduation requirements.

4. How is Phoenix Academy different from other district schools?

While other district schools offer support, Phoenix Academy has the distinct advantage of limiting enrollment to 200 students. The small size provides an opportunity for staff to build positive relationships with kids. The uniqueness of our size allows us to have school-wide activities that include a positive behavior system that rewards students who are meeting expectations both academically and behaviorally. In the strong technology enriched learning environment provided at Phoenix, there are “paperless” classrooms, rich art and science programs that include multiple grant-funded “hands-on” field trips, a “Focus the Nation” school-wide initiative and exceptional art projects that have been recognized district-wide. In addition, Phoenix Academy provides an after school tutoring program, free membership to the YMCA, PE activities at the YMCA, free yearbooks and agenda books. This diverse family-like environment respects each child’s unique characteristics and provides a strong support system that includes a full time social worker, a community supported mentoring program, strong local business partnerships and teachers and staff who cherish the whole child.

5. In what ways will my child benefit from attending Phoenix Academy?

The positive impact of Phoenix goes beyond the classroom walls. While data shows academic growth, parents report that their children are happier, more motivated, and appear to have higher self esteem than they did prior to attending Phoenix. This in part is due to Phoenix staff creating an environment where your child will be nurtured, respected and encouraged to succeed. The excellent rapport established between students and staff helps to encourage positive risk taking that teaches students how to make real-life decisions.
